The federal government has decided to mint a 5-euro “Planet Earth” collector’s coin and issue it on April 14, 2016.

The coin consists of three components: an outer ring, an inner core (pill) made of base metal and an embossable blue polymer ring inserted between the ring and the pill. This is translucent – i.e. partially transparent to light. The polymer ring made the 5 euro coin a world first in the world of coins.

The smooth edge of the coin contains the inscription in recessed embossing:

“BLUE PLANET EARTH – BLUE PLANET EARTH”

With the release of the new coin, the current product range tailored to the classic coin collector has been enriched. At the same time, the modern coin was intended to arouse a broader interest in German collector's coins, especially among young target groups.

The series began in 2017 with an issue on the “Tropical Zone” and ended in 2021 with a coin on the “Polar Zone”.

The color assignment of the polymer rings was carried out according to the prevailing climatic conditions of the individual zones using the temperature color scale: from hot (red) to cold (violet).

The 2017 “Tropical Zone” edition has a translucent red polymer ring.

Each of Germany's five mints will mint the coin with a polymer ring in a different shade of red.

The total mintage of the coin is said to be 2.3 million pieces, of which 300,000 pieces are in collector's quality mirror finish.
