The ducat offered here with the portrait of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I is a reprint that was issued in the last official year of minting of the ducat. The ducat began as a currency in Venice in the 13th century. The extensive trading relationships of the Venetians made the ducat so famous throughout Europe that the princes also began to mint their own ducats. However, most of the ducats come from Austria, but production was stopped due to the First World War.

The obverse shows Emperor Franz Joseph I with a laurel wreath and the edge of the coin says FRANC IOS I D G AVSTRIAE IMPERATOR. Translated, this lettering means Franz Joseph I, Emperor of the Austrians by the grace of God.

The reverse shows the double-headed eagle, the heraldic animal of the Austrian Empire. Around the eagle is the year of issue and an inscription in Latin that reads LOD ILL REX A A 1915 HVNGAR BOHEM GAL (King of Lodomeria, Illyria, Hungary, Bohemia and Galicia).

The simple ducat has a weight of 3.491 g and a gold content of 3.442 g. This results from the fineness of 986/1000, as copper was used as an alloy metal to make the coin more scratch-resistant.

The ducat ultimately impresses with its history and its resulting notoriety. Furthermore, replicas can be purchased close to the gold price as they have no significant collector's value. So ideal for investors who are interested in a coin with a long history at an attractive price.
