At the beginning, the Britannia was minted exclusively in gold by the British Royal Mint.
The first coins were issued in 1987 as a 1 oz gold coin.
The silver coin Britannia was first produced in 1987 to mark the 10th anniversary of the gold coin.
This made the Britannia the first silver bullion coin in Europe at the time. For the first time, the coin was produced with a fineness of 985/1,000.
However, this was changed in 2013 to a fineness of 999/1,000, the usual value for silver bullion coins.
The Royal Mint has been using security features in its minting since 2017. On the front of the coins, ray-like lines are inserted into the motif; these are known as radial lines.
The “Britannia” serves as the motif and also gives the coin its name. The "Britannia" stands for the personification of the British Isles.
From 2001 to 2008 the motif changed in the odd years.
The Royal Mint has been changing the coin motif irregularly since 2008.
On the coin motif we typically see a Britannia with a shield, helmet and trident.
On the edge of the Britannia, as with other silver bullion coins, we find the fine weight, the name and the face value.
The portrait of the British monarch Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles III is depicted on the value side of the Britannia. Delivery subject to availability.
The British bullion coin is minted by the Royal Mint in England with a purity of 999/1000.
The face value of the silver coin is 2 British pounds.
